BBB Calls New Restrictions Good News for Consumers
Robocalls — those annoying prerecorded commercial telemarketing calls — will soon be a thing of the past beginning Sept. 1. And it applies whether or not the consumer has done business with the seller.

Better Business Bureaus across the country are receiving reports of a new scam on Craigslist that deceives buyers by falsely claiming BBB accreditation and participation in a phony buyer’s protection program. BBB warns that there is no such thing as a BBB Purchase Protection Program and any online seller claiming participation in this program is scamming customers.

Consumers nationwide are sounding off to the Better Business Bureau about incessant automated telemarketing calls promising to lower interest rates on their credit cards. Not only are the calls a nuisance and violate U.S. Do-Not-Call laws, but some companies behind the calls are ripping off consumers by charging large upfront fees to negotiate lower interest rates with credit card companies— something consumers can do themselves for free.

Consumer fraud complaints have increased 29 percent in the territory served by the Better Business Bureau of northern Colorado and greater Wyoming, according to Pam King, BBB president/CEO. This statistic is borne out in the Consumer Sentinel Data Book recently released by the Federal Trade Commission.
