Cash for Clunkers is history.

But — statistically speaking — it’s still an interesting story. What kind of cars and trucks did consumers race to cash in on? What kind of vehicles did they purchase?

Dealers nationwide helped 690,114 consumers trade in their clunkers for new vehicles totaling $2.877.9 million. California made the most trades with $326.8 million in voucher and the District of Columbia the fewest with $67,500 vouchers.

Average fuel economy of new vehicles is 24.9 MPG. The Toyota Corolla was the top choice of consumers, followed by Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Ford Focus FWD, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Versa, Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Honda Fit and Ford Escape FWD.

Average dual economy of trade-ins was 15.8 MPG. The Ford Explorer 4WD was the most common clunker traded in, followed by the Ford F150 Pickup 2WD, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD, Ford Explorer 2WD, Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan 2WD, Jeep Cherokee 4WD, Chevrolet Blazer 4WD, Chevrolet C1500 Pickup 2WD, Ford F150 Pickup 4WD and Ford Windstar FWD Van.

If you missed out on the program and a vehicle purchase is in your future, look for BBB accredited car dealerships in your community.
